![]() The hiring sparked a strongly negative reaction in conservative media and social media, which highlighted derogatory tweets about white people that Jeong had posted mostly in 20. In August 2018, Jeong was hired by The New York Times to join its editorial board as lead writer on technology, commencing in September. Eventually, hundreds of messages and proposals later, a temporary conclusion was reached, and the following text was added to Jeong’s biography: Editors also discussed whether to flat-out call the tweets racist or to adopt some other adjective (inflammatory, perhaps). Debate about the noteworthiness of the topic went on for days and thousands of words. Others pointed out that dozens of news organizations, including gold-standard ones in the Wikipedia community like the BBC, had covered her tweets. Some editors argued that Wikipedia should not act like a news site, trying to include up-to-the-minute updates. ![]() In this case, the warring over Jeong became a proxy battle over the inclusion of any mention of the tweets. ![]() They try to stay away from “ presentism.” They’ve tried to create objective standards (of importance, say) for including facts about people.Īs in a formal debate, all these rules can be marshaled to support a variety of conclusions about what should or should not be in an article about Sweden or donuts or somebody’s biography. For example, Wikipedians maintain that they must maintain an NPOV, or Neutral Point of View. These rules are arcane and quite specific to Wikipedia. Wikipedia’s internal rules guide debates about what content belongs in articles, and how events can be described. After her hiring, these tweets were picked up by right-wing media as proof of her “racism.” The battle over including these tweets in her Wikipedia bio has been the subject of a brutal edit war, which is like a grim national-politics-level recapitulation of the old, funny Wikipedia wars about cow-tipping, hummus, and Nikola Tesla. Over the years, Jeong has angrily and colorfully tweeted hundreds of times about her frustrations with white people (“ Are white people genetically predisposed to burn faster in the sun, thus logically being only fit to live underground like groveling goblins” “ oh man it’s kind of sick how much joy i get out of being cruel to old white men”). The ever-widening maelstrom surrounding tweets by Sarah Jeong, the latest hire by the New York Times editorial board, may consume all the atoms in the known universe, and as Wikipedia is of this world, it, too, must be a place to immortalize (or attempt to immortalize) Jeong as racist.

(For example, see such retorts to the magazine’s claims as user ch3burashka ’s “It seems Next’s April Fools issue came out 2 months late” and user Scooper ’s Oscar Wilde-esque bon mot “fake and ur a bitch.”) As evidenced by a comment thread about the Next Generation cover on Giant Bomb ’s forum, the general consensus is that the low-poly graphics of the Unreal era look painfully dated today. ![]() And the number of operatives volunteering to join the rescue only seems to be growing.Īny outsider looking strictly at the chronology could be forgiven for thinking these artists are volunteering for a suicide mission. We now know the general style they’re airlifting out-the same basic one as Unreal ’s-as the low-poly aesthetic (or just “low-poly,” if you’re in game-familiar company). However, Burke is among a new wave of developers and digital artists parachuting back onto the beaches of the mid- ‘ 90s for graphics inspiration. ![]() No matter how realistic a computer-generated image appears in the moment, inevitably it will soon look both naive and obsolete. That fact makes attempting to replicate the natural world a boobytrapped mission for all digital artists concerned with their work’s longevity. More than 17 years later the honor seems as antiquated as an award for “Sturdiest thatch roof” or “Healthiest well water.” Avant-garde game designer Leo Burke summarized the problem as succinctly as possible when I spoke to him over Skype: “With Moore’s Law ”-the generally accepted notion that computer processing capabilities double every two years-” and graphics getting better every year, fidelity has a shelf life with games.” An artist can only ever get as close to the bullseye as the current technology will allow. When it comes to digital artwork, realism is a target in perpetual motion. Instead, the Next Generation cover represents a more vexing problem for any digital artist: the dysfunctional relationship between time, technology, and our own visual standards. Their work was innovative, if not revolutionary, in its era. More than 17 years later, though, the honor and the artwork that earned it both seem as antiquated as an award for “Sturdiest thatch roof” or “Healthiest well water.”Įven so, none of this should be considered an indictment of Unreal ’s graphics team. No doubt other developers would have sacrificed their pinkie toes to win “Best looking PC game of 1997” over Unreal that February. ![]() Like many other frozen moments from the past-especially in the realm of technology-this cover image registers as considerably less awe-inspiring in hindsight. Yet a one-word headline doubled as the featured game’s title and the editors’ breathless opinion about the image’s quality: “ Unreal! ” And lest its readers miss the point, Next Generation tagged on the gushing parenthetical “Yes, this is an actual PC game screenshot… Unreal could be the best looking PC game of 1997.” And it felt as though one could individually count every polygon on display. The textures on its mottled flesh and the castle’s craggy stones looked equally and obviously manufactured. The creature’s contours were all hard, straight edges rather than organic curves. The creature’s confrontational pose dominated the frame, leaving only enough space for an abbreviated view of a beige stone castle and a murky lime sky behind it. In February 1997, Next Generation magazine splashed its cover with an image of a red-eyed reptilian humanoid boasting an Olympian’s physique and a pair of Wolverine-esque knuckle-mounted claws. ![]() This is the first of a three-part series. ![]() I'd be interested to hear whether it works with other distros/versions and devices. Unlike this solar system, your followers are not alone in the corner of the galaxy. I wanted that tavern up, like, yesterday. None of this is required, but if you like GodFinger, you'll want to grease the wheels of planetary development by purchasing some awe. Real world money buys awe points, which are traded in for huge stacks of gold, refilled mana, instantly complete buildings, and the resurrection of the dead. Really, there is a whole lot of waiting in GodFinger… unless you want to spend a little cash. You must wait for followers to replenish their strength before they can get back to work. You have to wait for buildings to be constructed by your mini-minions when placed on the planet. ![]() You have to wait for farming to complete in order to generate gold. It's quite the little ecosystem and though ngmoco says GodFinger is about to undergo some additional tuning, it feels decently balanced right now. After all, you need that mana to keep your farms and relaxation sites going via divine acts, like rain showers or bursts of sunlight. After your followers are refreshed, you put them back to work or send them to worship the totem and speed mana production. More on awe in a minute.) You must give them time off at a campfire, tent, or watering hole to replenish their spent energies. (Well, you can, but then you have to spend the third precious resource – awe – to resurrect them. ![]() You cannot work your followers to death, though. Your followers produce gold by working farms. Though mana powers divine intervention, money still makes the world go 'round. You generate a little mana every few minutes, but you can speed that up by dropping followers around a sacred totem dedicated to you. The energy needed to power acts like lightning bolts or flooding (which is how you fill lakes that your followers use for fishing) is called mana. It's a small, immediate reward that keeps you playing. One of the most enjoyable things in GodFinger to me is to drag a sunbeam across the ground and watch colorful flowers grow. But divine acts also result in small changes, too. You must zap the skeleton with a lightning bolt, thus introducing you to a few new concepts: followers can die if you do not protect them and that lightning bolts are always fun to flick down from the heavens. For example, you're given a storm cloud at the exact same time a skeleton rises from the ground and attacks your followers. As you move through the first ten levels of GodFinger, you have a set of smaller goals designed to help you understand how the game works. Or, in a move inspired by Pocket God (which seems to be the primary impetus for GodFinger), fling them around the planet for kicks. Place them where they need to be, such as at a farm. You can also pick up your followers by tapping them and pulling them into the air. You move the sun and clouds around the world to direct weather patterns and satisfy needs, like sunshine on crops. As the unseen deity, you manipulate the planet and its inhabitants. The general goal is to grow this planet, dress it up with a little terraforming, and keep your followers happy. You begin GodFinger with a rock floating out in space, occupied by a handful of followers. ![]() More information should eventually be provided on. The negative pressure particulate categories are based facepiece coverage. And keep in mind that people’s faces come in all shapes and sizes you may need to select from a variety of models and sizes to find properly fitting respirators for all workers who need one.Īs per AS/NZS 1715 there are 3 different classes of particulate filters, P1, P2 and P3. Glasses and half face respirators, for example, may compete for space on the same part of the face - the bridge of the nose - so it’s vital to find equipment that fits together without causing either leakage around the respirator edges or loss of eye protection.Ĭomfort and ability to do the job are also important considerations if the work is particularly strenuous, try to select respirators that are as lightweight and streamlined as possible. For example, half-mask respirators with cartridges and filters have an APF of 10.īesides choosing equipment appropriate for your workplace’s types and levels of hazards, you must also consider compatibility with other required protective equipment, such as safety glasses and hard hats. AS/NZS 1715 lists APFs for different types of respirators. Once you know your required APF, you can narrow down your choices to those respirators that can reduce exposure to below the WES. Refer to your local APF information to help select correct respirator/respiratory combination. (This is called the “hazard ratio.”) For instance:Ĭontaminant exposure level: 500 ppm ÷ WES (of that exposure contaminant): 50 ppm = APF: 10 ![]() To see what level of APF your workplace needs, divide your exposure levels by the exposure limit. ![]() For instance, an APF of 10 means the respirator can protect against exposure levels that are up to 10 times the WES for that hazard. The APF is the workplace level of respiratory protection that a respirator or class of respirators is expected to provide to employees when the employer implements a continuing, effective respiratory protection program as specified by AS/NZS 1715. AS/NZS 1716 tested respirators have an assigned protection factor (APF), which can range from 10 to 100+. Where a specific respiratory recommendation is not available from Australian or New Zealand authorities, the use of respiratory protective equipment may be drawn from recognised international authorities or standardisation bodies such National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Where there is a existing respirator which meets the requirements of AS/NZS 1716 this should be used in the workplace. Step Three: Determine level of protection needed. If putting those controls into place is not feasible, choose respiratory protection that help bring exposures down to an acceptable level for workers. If your levels are above the limit, look to reduce exposures through engineering, or administrative controls. If your employee exposure levels are below the WES, then respirators aren’t legally required, though you may still want to offer respirators for voluntary use. Measurements may also be in the form of 15-minute short-term exposure limits (STEL) or a ceiling limit (C), which is the absolute limit that should never be exceeded at any time by a worker. ![]() For instance, both could be expressed in ppm for an eight-hour time-weighted average (TWA). In any event, make sure both your measured concentrations and the levels to which you are comparing them (such as the WES) use the same units of measure. You can often use values set by other groups, such as the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) – if those values are lower than the WES. The results are typically measured in parts per million (ppm) or milligrams per cubic meter of air (mg/m3), commonly averaged over an eight-hour work shift.Ĭompare your exposure levels to the local workplace exposure standard (WES) set by Safe Work Australia, to determine if action is required. So we decided that people in the west should also be able to play the definitive version of the game rather than the cut and butchered one. There has also been some censorship applied to the game as well. Product placement was cut and plenty more things. Various sidequests and cutscenes were cut, some side activities like Shogi or other minigames were cut. ![]() A release date is currently TBA in Japan. As some of you may know, the western version of Yakuza 3 had a lot of changes made to it due "cultural differences". While you might suspect that the game is a long way off, Sega is apparently ready to begin a PR push and will open up a portal website in the coming days. Development began on Yakuza 3 right after Kenzan finished up. Yakuza 3 will continue with series traditions of making use of famous actors for its voice staff and also tapping into real world brands for in-game signs and shops, Nagoshi told the magazine. Kamiyacho will still be the main area of play, though. According to Nagoshi, in the two years since Yakuza 2 (in-game time has progressed at the same rate as real world time), Kiryu and Haruka have, for some reason or another, ended up way down in the south. Yakuza 2 added a new location to the game world, a version of Kamiyacho located in the Osaka area. Expected characters will return for the sequel (we'll keep from telling you who those are, since it's likely that many in the English speaking world won't play Yakuza 2 until later this year). The game returns to Kamiyacho, the setting of the original and the primary setting of the sequel, and features Kazuma Kiryu in the main character role once again. While Kenzan took the series into Edo era Japan, Yakuza 3 is a full sequel to Yakuza 2 and tells the story of what happened after that title. As with Kenzan, the sequel is coming to the PlayStation 3. Producer Toshihiro Nagoshi revealed to Famitsu that development is fully under way at Sega's NE Software R&D Planning Section. Unlike the first PS3 Yakuza game, which was known in Japan as Ryu ga Gotoku Kenzan (Ryu ga Gotoku being the Japanese name for the Yakuza series), this one has the actual "3" in the title and is formally known as Ryu ga Gotoku 3. The real Yakuza 3 made its debut in this week's Famitsu. ![]() The budget decisions you make are only as good as the data you’re relying on. Save As again to create a budget just for this year.
